Fresh from the market

Pasta with smoked whitefish, asparagus and spinach

There was so much to see this morning at the market. Since I was short on time, I didn’t get a chance to stroll around and look at all the heirloom seedlings they had for sale. However, I did get what I was looking for and more.  On my list this morning was fresh asparagus – I ended up buying slim ones from Wooler Dale Farm. I also picked up some smoked whitefish from Akiwenzie's Fish, kale and daisies – so pretty!

I’m looking forward to going back to the market next week to get some seedlings for my mom’s garden. I have given up hope on growing tomatoes on my balcony…there just isn’t enough sunlight during the day.

Success and failure...

I don’t know why but I can’t seem to figure out Swiss rolls. I managed making a decent looking one earlier this year. This time around, it wouldn’t roll up nicely and cracked. It definitely doesn’t look like a roll but it’s quite delicious. I have to figure out why it’s not rolling up...perhaps I need to try a new pan.

I did make a wonderful dinner. After picking up some pointers from a Chinese cooking show last week, my Chinese style beef has improved in appearance and taste. I also bought a package of soup ingredients from the Chinese supermarket. I just threw everything into the pot, brought it up to a boil and into the thermo pot it went. A day later, we had a pot of yummy soup.

More cooking than baking

I haven't been baking as much as I hoped. Rather I’ve been learning to cook. Here’s a sampling of what I made for dinner the last few weeks. It’s not the tastiest but hopefully my skills are improving! I definitely have to work on my photography skills though. My pictures are still a hit and miss.
